Family Travel Tips

Booking a family vacation can be quite tricky, and there are a lot of things to consider to make everybody happy.

Let’s look at some important points when traveling with your family:

  • NONSTOP vs DIRECT flights
“direct” flights are NOT nonstop. They have ONE flight number, but can make several stops!
  • Regular room vs. Junior suite vs. 1 or 2 bedrooms suites
Most resorts don’t “guarantee” the rooms to be CONNECTING, in which case a 1 or 2 bedroom suite might be the only acceptable option! FYI, “adjacent” and “adjoining” is not the same as connecting (there is NO door connecting the two rooms!)
  • On the other hand cruise lines GUARANTEE connecting cabins. As a matter of fact, cabin numbers can be assigned 2 years in advance!
  • Special international restrictions apply for minors traveling with just one parent. The non-traveling parent must give notarized consent! Be sure to inquire about any additional rules (some are country specific!)
  • Some cruise lines will accept infants 12 weeks and older. Others have a different minimum age, but keep in mind, that many cruise lines only have showers, and might not allow kids in diapers into their pools.
  • Also consider that most cruise lines charge a 1 year old child the same as a 26 year old.
  • Some travel insurance plans allow kids (up to 30!) to be covered at NO additional cost!
  • Some travel insurance plans allow you to cancel out for ANY reason (yes, even a hangnail!) whatsoever, but then the children will also have to pay a small premium! … and the list goes on!

There are some pros and cons to any vacation, and we gladly take the time, to make sure that you will have all the information needed to make an educated decision!

Every family is different and like so many other things in life a family vacation is a very personal choice. The good news is there are more options than ever before.

Even the Four Seasons and Ritzs of the world now have good children programs. Upscale Tour Operators, like Tauck and A&K now offer specific departure for just families. And so does Disney. Expedition Operators, like Lindblad and National Geographic offer excellent tours to the Galapagos, Africa, India, and many other exotic spots. If you want something more sports oriented there are Butterfield and Robinson, and Backroads for excellent hiking, kayaking and biking adventures (specifically geared towards families!).

And let’s not forget the Dude Ranches and the tremendous choice of all-inclusive resorts. Some offer shows (and play time!) with the Sesame Street Characters, others have the Flintstones or Sponge Bob … you pick! The kids can learn how to scuba dive or mountain climb or spend time making strawhats with Cinderella.

There are also the new Nickelodeon Resorts where you can hang out with Sponge Bob and Dora and get slimed everyday.

Or… we can also rent an RV for you or a yacht or a villa (including a Margarita Boy and Massage Therapist – and of course, a Nanny!). The possibilities are endless. There are indeed a lot of different options and honestly, it can get very confusing.
